Does Home Insurance Cover Basement Flooding in Ontario?
By Polaris Restoration Group · · 7 min read
Sewer backup, overland flooding, and sudden pipe bursts are treated differently by Ontario insurers. Learn what's typically covered and how to prepare your claim.
It depends on where the water came from
Ontario insurers classify water damage by source. The cause of your basement flood usually decides whether a claim is covered, so it's worth understanding the categories before you need them.
Common types of water damage coverage
Policies vary, but these are the categories you'll typically see:
- Sudden and accidental water damage (e.g. a burst pipe) — often included in standard policies
- Sewer backup — usually an optional add-on
- Overland flooding (water entering from outside at ground level) — usually a separate optional coverage
- Gradual leaks and lack of maintenance — usually excluded
Check your policy before a storm
Read your policy wording or call your broker to confirm whether you have sewer backup and overland flood coverage, and what your deductible and limits are. This is the single best thing you can do ahead of spring thaw and heavy rain.
How to support your claim
Document the damage with photos and video, keep receipts for emergency expenses, and don't throw out damaged items until your adjuster says so. A restoration company that records moisture readings and itemizes damage gives your insurer the detail it needs.
Reduce your risk
Test your sump pump each season, consider a battery backup, install a backwater valve, keep eavestroughs clear, and grade soil away from your foundation. Many Ontario municipalities offer subsidies for backwater valves — check with your town.
